Follow the Stars...and the Flaming Torches!
45 Minutes from RAB you will find the city of Freinsheim. This historical city is known for it's red wines and is situated in the middle of the Palatinate vineyards. This small town of 5,000 inhabitants has a lovely Christmas Market, complete with star lit pathway, that will be open this weekend on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, meet in the town center at 5:45 and purchase a torch for 4 Euros. The torch walk will take you for a romantic city tour through these winding streets lined in half timber homes. Before you leave town, be sure to visit the nativity scene at the town hall, which has live animals that the kids will really enjoy meeting. On Saturday they will have a "Krippenspiel" at the nativity scene at 5:00 p.m., followed by the torch city tour at 5:45 p.m. There will also be a merry go round and vendors serving a variety of foods, beverages, and gifts. A Market in the City of Emperors
The Speyer Imperial Cathedral is the largest preserved Romanesque church in Europe. In it's shadow, you will find the Speyer Christmas market. This market has all the essentials: food, mulled wine, gifts, and unique handiworks. At the other end of the market, you will find the Old City Gate. This gate is 188 feet tall and one of the highest and most significant gates in Germany. For the kids, there will be some carnival rides, delicious sweets, and ice skating! Adult and youth ticket is 5 Euro, Kids up to 10 years is 4 Euro. You can also rent skates for 3 Euros. There is also plenty of space in this area for the kids to run around and burn off energy.
