Drosselgasse 1, 65385 Rudesheim am Rhein
This Christmas market has a few unique offerings that make it a great one for both adults and kids. Parents will love the famous Rüdesheim coffee, which is made with the locally distilled Asbach Uralt brandy, topped with either whip cream…or fire! You’ll enjoy wandering through the streets of this fairy tale village, taking in the fun around every corner.
For the kids, the market offers Europe’s largest nativity scene with life size figures. If the kids need to run around and burn some energy, take them on the Rüdesheimer Seilbahn (on Oberstraße in town), which is a cable car that will carry you above the vineyards to the massive Niederwald Monument. This statue was built in 1870 to commemorate the Unification of Germany and is absolutely massive!
At the top there is a restroom, café, lots of room for the kids to run and explore along the forest paths, and breathtaking views of Rüdesheim and the Rhine river. The cable car is open during the Christmas market from 11:00 a.m.– 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and open until 7:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. If you find yourself wandering the nature paths at the monument, you may come to the interesting Zauberhöhle. It was built between 1790 and 1796 and is a walled corridor which flows into a round building called the Zauberhütte.
We had fun challenging the kids to see if they were brave enough to walk the 60 meters in complete darkness. Mostly they ran in, screamed as loud as they could, and ran back out.
